featuring the amazing victory won by ex-Ford workers at Visteon! After factory occupations and the threat to picket out workers at Ford's state of the art plant at Bridgend, Visteon and Ford were forced back to the negotiating table - where they conceded a redundancy package better than the Fords package the workers were demanding. This will make it the biggest redundancy package ever paid out by Fords anywhere!
On Tuesday 12th around 100 people demonstrated outside the London Metropolitan University's Commercial Road campus, following a call to support the student occupation of the university. Those demonstrating included a continget from the IWW and UCU unions, students and staff from the university, as well as campaigners against the privatisation of education. People demonstrated for about one and a half hours, during which speeches were made by students and unions staff. See video.
The management of the university has hired private security to prevent people from joining the occupation. They prevented the demonstrators from visiting en mass the occupied area, although, for some very strange reason, people were allowed into the occupied rooms in small groups, so many of those demonstrating eventually did so in order to show support to the students in occupation.
See below some pics of the demo:
The canteen of London Metropolitan University's Commercial Road campus in Whitechapel has been occupied by students in protest over plans that could see 550 staff jobs axed. This is part of the campaign against LMU's scheme to restructure as a result of its massive financial crisis.
Students and striking staff claim that they should not be made to pay for years of bad management. They state that "those who are not responsible for the financial problems are now being punished for them". Unlike all the other universities occupied earlier this year, its seems that London Metropolitan will not allow this to run its course, as the management is taking the students to court to regain possession of the occupied area. There have also been reports that the governors are getting in private security to prevent anyone from joining the occupation, therefore the students have been calling for support. The anti-authoritarian spirit of MayDay was marked this year in London with a "Guilty, A Celebration of the Police State" street party called by the Space Hijackers. Around 300 people gathered outside the Bank of England from 5pm and partied into the evening.
Three mobile sound systems were brought into the square right in the middle of The City, as a well as a traditional MayDay pole and several props, whilst many people were wearing fancy dresses with the theme of police repression. In contrast with the recent G20 events, police kept a low profile throughout the evening.

Following the insulting and unacceptable offer from Visteon this week the sacked workers are stepping up their 24/7 picket of the Enfield factory. The Belfast and Basildon Visteon workers have also rejected the offer. Now more than ever they need support and solidarity for their decision to continue their struggle for justice.

Statement from Enfield Ford Visteon workers
At a hearing at the High Court on Monday 6th April, the union Unite won the right for the Enfield occupation to continue without further legal duress until noon on Thursday 9th April so that negations with Visteon US could take place. (Two local trade union representatives had by then already been served with restraining orders threatening them with prison sentences.)
Kevin Nolan, the Enfield Unite convener, flew with Derek Simpson and Roger Maddison, to New York on Tuesday and held promising talks with the senior management, which will be resumed on Tuesday 13th somewhere in the UK.
After Kevin Nolan reported back, the workforce accepted Unites advice to cease the occupation by the legal deadline. The enthusiastic demonstration of several hundred people who had gathered to express support for their cause clapped, chanted and cheered the occupiers for the stand they had taken.
They are now picketing the factory to keep the pressure on Ford Visteon, and prevent them from removing equipment or products, and if necessary prevent Ford Visteon from re-opening the factory with a scab labour work force.
The 24-hour picket will be difficult without financial, physical and political support. Messages of support, financial contributions and physical presence are required urgently. Kevin Nolan can be contacted on 07956 375 410 or knolan21@msn.com.
Enfield and Haringey TUCs have called on a rally Saturday 11th April at the factory, Morson Road, EN3 4NQ.
A Ford Visteon workers support group is helping to coordinate support by sustaining the pickets and publicising the Ford Visteon workers struggle for justice. By agreement with the pickets, Haringey Solidarity Group will channel financial support to the pickets through their bank account. Cheques made out to 'Haringey Solidarity Group' or 'HSG' may be sent to HSG, PO Box 2474, London N8 0HW (write Ford Visteon on the back). Next support group meeting Thursday 16th, 7.30pm, Millennium Centre, 386 West Green Rd, N15 3QL. All welcome.
Visteon workers occupying the factory at Enfield left the building together at midday today. There were around 200 supporters to greet them with rousing cheers, applause and chants as the occupiers descended the spiral steps at midday (the time the eviction notice became active).
Despite the difficult decision to leave the factory, which was fraught with legal implications, the workers are determined to continue the struggle for a decent redundancy package and all outstanding wages owing.
They have set up a picket outside the factory to ensure Visteon can't begin to strip it down. A meeting has been called by the Haringey Solidarity Group to help arrange practical support for these workers as their fight continues.

Workers at Visteon car component plants in Enfield (North London) and Belfast are occupying their factories. The workers, some of whom have worked at the plants for 40 years, were told their jobs were finished and given 20 minutes to clear their lockers.
The majority of the workforce are ex-Ford workers, producing products for Ford, and on contracts that were supposed to mirror Ford contracts. That means Ford should step in to offer decent redundancy, workers say.
