The G-20 meeting to be held in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania is taking place in just under a month (Sept. 24-25, 2009) and it would be nice to receive some advice and/or words of solidarity from London G20 protesters about how to achieve success with this round of protests. Online support via Twitter updates & Blogs would be helpful too! You folks have experience and we need to here from you in the states!

Brian Haw has been standing vigil and camping and campaigning for peace opposite the Houses of Parliament in Parliament Square, Westminster, London for 3000 days, since June 2, 2001. Brian initially came to the square to protest against the injustice and suffering caused to the people of Iraq by the UN economic sanctions and the bombing of the country by the US and UK, but has stayed ever since to show his strong opposition to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

International Action Day
"Freedom Not Fear 2009 - Stop the surveillance-mania"
On 12. September 2009 we call for the 2nd International Action Day in as many capital cities as possible around the world to demonstrate against the total retention of telecommunication data and other instruments of surveillance. We would like to recall the remembrance of the historical achievement of civil rights and liberties as a heritage of the age of enlightenment and to support the trust in security in our free society.
The International Action Day "Freedom Not Fear 2009″ is organized by organizations in several countries.
The goal is to organize protest marches or arts actions or lectures or flashmobs... in as many countries as possible at the very same day on 12. September 2009.
Please click on the tiny flags at the top of the page to get information about the actions planned in your country. You can also find an overview about all coutries/national contacts and other data here.
Your country is not listed or the page is still empty? That means, that nobody has taken responsibility for the protest in your country, so it is an opportunity for YOU do do so!
Here is a help page for you! The concept can be found here. Or please get in contact with us, we will provide you with further informations and will help you with organizing the protest in your country!

The Big Green Gathering, a fixture in the alternative calendar, was due to return after two years this week. 15–20,000 people were expected to turn up on Wednesday (29th) to the site near Cheddar, Somerset, for Europe’s largest green event - a five-day festival promoting sustainability and renewable energy, with everything from allotments to alternative media. Hundreds of staff and volunteers are already on site, and its cancellation comes just days before gates were due to open. Organisers, most of whom work for nothing, are gutted. One told SchNEWS “We are so disappointed not to be having this year’s gathering – it means so much to so many people”.
A last-minute injunction by Mendip District Council, supported by Avon and Somerset Police, put the ki-bosh on the entire event - citing the potential for ‘crime and disorder’ and safety concerns. This was despite the fact that the festival had actually been granted a licence on the 30th of June. According to Avon and Somerset police’s website “[We] went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure this event took place.” This is of course utter bollocks.

AS CORPORATE BACKERS GO AFTER THE LUCRATIVE HIPPY DOLLAR...
The Big Green Gathering is and has been the leading event in the growing number of independent, politically progressive festivals building across the country over the past decade. But like most others, it has been financially gouged out by growing license, police and insurance costs. After the 2007 Big Green, the festival was broke, and may never have returned. It's back - but how did they do it?
It's been a well kept secret that Big Green has been bailed out by US-funded corporate venture capitalists - KLL and AEG (see below) - and it remains to be seen how this will affect BGG now or in the future. It may be that this year is a bit like the first Glastonbury after Mean Fiddler took over in 2002 - i.e. the security is considerably beefed up, and the crowd is noticeably missing the sort of random festie nutters who make it a proper festival - the ones who probably jumped the fence or blagged their way in. No doubt there are people on the BGG committee who are horrified by this development, and AEG and KLL may have come to understand that to make money out of this particular, er, 'market' - as opposed to a mainstream rock or sports event - they need to screw money out of punters in an as invisible and benign way as possible.
