Img_2138-thumb

After the riot and the cleanup, a lot of shops are boarded up and the securing was still going on yesterday, while the first windows were being rapaired as well. Smashed up shops included charity shops, and small shops, besides the big chains, phone and betting shops.

Brixton Road Pics - Foot Locker + H&M

Img_2076-thumb

Police were very few, very tense and very ineffective. Foot Locker was up in flames, while H&M was being looted. Marks and Spencers, Bodyshop, McDonalds and most other shops on Brixton Road had glass damage, while other places like the games shop at the corner to Ferndale Road and William Hill on Stockwell Road have big gaping holes and look like some things might have gone missing.

Assange out on bail, Anonymous out in support

Img_1264-thumb

Assange was granted bail earlier today, after appearing at Westminster Magistrates Court. Over 100 people turned out in support and lined the sidewalk opposite the court, many wearing masks. The event was turned into an impromptu speakers corner by several people addressing various issues around the charges, the leaks as well as wider issues of freedom of speech and information and social justice. Despite the court decision, Assange remains in prison, as the swedish authorities intervened on Tuesday evening. Now the High Court will decide by 16th of December.

The arrest and refusal of bail on charges of sex crimes had sparked another round of cyber war. There are several issues around the charges and conditions of extradition, e.g. Assange has not yet been formally charged in Sweden. Read more on this story...

Life is too short - pics and report

Img_1225-thumb

Some pics of the march today. Weather was nice, cops hardly any hassle until the end. Passers by were happy to take the flyers, and some cheering in support. Starting at Piccadilly Circus we went the long way round to St Pancras, where the march didn't stop, but went right on. Some folks even got through the border at the Eurostar check in, which seemed to puzzle some and freak out others.

Lovely.

Mayall Road is gone, long live Mayall Road!

Morning-thumb

This morning the squatters of 144 Mayall road had their second eviction notice. The first eviction date saw friends and neighbours turn out en masse to a lovely street breakfast with no bailiffs even trying to show their faces. This time they did show up, supported by the cops. While the first attempt at repossessing the council property was again unsuccessful, they did make a couple of arrests. And left...

mass picnic and a grilling

Img_1040-thumb

On Sunday, 6th September about 200 people gathered for a mass picnic against the planned Metropolitan Police operational centre for the Olympics 2012 on Wandstead Flats. Although the sky was grey and a brisk wind was keeping the kite flyers busy, the announced rain never came. The superintendent for the park was brave enough to attend and got grilled by local residents about numerous issues with the plans, such as lack of consultation with the local residents, the changes that would be made to Epping forest act, concerns about traffic and much, much more.

... still no peace

Img_0871-thumb

Although most people had already left at ten minutes past two, the last 25 people left for another march through the city, ending up back at Rose Court. With a few more people the energy would have been even more awesome. Sadly everyone seemed to have urgent appointments (at the pub?). Again the street was taken, and besides similar slogans as before "No Justice, No Peace..." Wwhose street? Our Streets!" the general public also got some education about proper bike etiquette and other lighter issues.

No Justice No Peace...

About 200 people rallied today at Rose Court after it was announced that there will be no prosecution for Ian Tomlinson's murder during the G20 demonstrations in London in April 2009. Quite a few people took the opportunity to express their anger and grief, about Ian Tomlinson and everyone who has died at the hands of the police. Then the crowd took to the streets and after a short halt at Bank went to Cornhill to have a minute of silence in memory of Ian Tomlinson.  Find out what happened after you went to the pub...
