22.1.09 RIOTS IN GREECE
The murder of the student Alexis Grigoropoulos by a policeman, has sparked in Greece some of the biggest riots since the demise of the dictatorship in that country. Athens has been in the last month, the stage of continous battles between students and youth and the repressive local police, which after having shot thousands of tear gas canisters has not managed to placate the revolt.
For some people this is the first credit-crunch riot, a sign of things to come, as economic pressure hits hard across the continent and particularly targets youth. But what is actually happening in Greece at the moment and what are the prospects of the movement that has risen in the streets of Athens?
This event will host testimonies from activists who have participated in the protests, and projections of video to provide grassroots information to counter the distortions of mainstream media.
