Not everyone may be familiar with the restrictions on filming in public spaces, shopping centres, even parks, unless they have been given marching orders for taking out a camera in Trafalgar Square or London's Docklands, or have been served 'a caution' for filming without a licence in Oxford Street. In fact, brawny security guards, community safety wardens and self-appointed 'jobsworths' are refusing our young volunteer film crews 'permission to film' on many of our streets.

Whilst the rationale for banning filming is often justified on the grounds of 'privacy' and 'security' concerns, there is in fact no law against filming or taking photographs in public places. Most restrictions are based on contemporary anxieties and prejudices, not law. At the centre of the ever-growing shut down of the public sphere is a deep rooted suspicion of the citizen filmmaker or photographer, who is routinely identified as a predatory or threatening figure. Yet filming, news-gathering and photography by citizen journalists has a long and important history and freedom to continue this tradition is vital to our democracy.

On the 18th October in East London we aim to highlight to the public these 'film free zones' and to shoot a programme about the right to film. We are encouraging all film-makers (and photographers) and everyone who believes in freedom to view, record, capture and question, to join us on the day.

Bring your still cameras, mobile phones, mini DVs or whatever you may have and help us to promote the right to view, record and question the world around us.

At these places and times, we will take out our cameras, mini DVs and mobile phones and start filming our film makers, interviewing members of the public and recording any attempts to prevent us. We aim to make a stand for the freedom to film and a programme re-establishing the right to film in East London without harassment.

For more information contact:

The WORLDwrite Centre world.write@btconnect.com
Telephone (0044) 0208 985 5435
