Bent Bars is a letter-writing project for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, gender-variant, intersex, and queer prisoners in Britain. We recognise that LGBTQ people are over-represented in the prison system as a result of systemic discrimination, inequality and social exclusion. The project aims to develop stronger connections and build solidarity between LGBTQ communities inside and outside prison walls.
Come along and find out more about the project, write a letter to a prisoner or help us put together resources. Writing can give someone in prison vital emotional support, help them be less vulnerable to violence and be a valuable exchange on many levels for all involved. We will also be compiling a newsletter about coming out in prison, with writing from prisoners already involved in the project.
