No Borders Camp @ Lesvos, 25-31 August 2009
Come to Rampart to find out about the no borders camp + in Lesvos (25-31 August 2009). A night of discussion, videos, photos and information to raise awareness and mobilise for the camp on the island of Lesvos (Greece), one of the main entrance gates for thousands of migrants seeking to enter Europe.
More than 1.100 migrants and refugees have lost their lives that way in Aegean sea in the last 20 years. The Hellenic Coast Guard, with the support of Frontext (the EU borders police, which started operating on the island in July 2008), within the framework of "prevention of entrance" policies put the lives of migrants in danger every day. Lesvos is the site of a detention centre where refugees and migrants are detained for weeks and sometimes months under inhumane conditions. Those who manage to continue their journey, if caught, are sent back to Greece in application of the Regulation Dublin II. (more at http://lesvos09.antira.info/). Yet, the community in Lesvos is involved in supporting the migrants, particularly those engaged in the centre for under-18s.
The info night will also include firsthand accounts about the lives and struggles of migrants at the Southern edge of the EU borders . It will also be a space to share the experience and reflections from the recent no borders camp in Calais and to coordinate actions and projects between the two camps across the two sides of the Continent and to jon the fight against the practices of control and repression of the EU border regime, against criminalisation of migration and for the freedom of movement for all!
(Food will be served from 8.30 pm)
