>FRETECO: Occupied Factories and Workers' Control in Venezuela
*
Venezuela\, 2009\, 40mins
Spanish with English subtitles.

A new film on the Venezuelan Revolution. Produced by Vive TV i
n Venezuela\, this new documentary on FRETECO explores the movement of o
ccupied factories and workers' control in Venezuela.
From the Mitsu
bishi auto plant to the Inveval valve plant\; from the Gotcha T-Shirt fa
ctory to the INAF hardware factory\, workers young and old\, male and fe
male\, tell their stories and explain why they came to the realization t
hat demanding nationalization under workers' control is the only way for
ward.
With examples explaining how factory and workers' councils fu
nction\, the role of the communal councils\, and the movement for "trade
unionism of a new type\," this video provides a living\, breathing look
at a crucial aspect of the Venezuelan Revolutionary process.
Hands

strong>LA TOMA (The Take)*
Argentina\, 2004\, 87mins
Spanish and English with English subtitles.
A film by direct
or Avi Lewis and writer Naomi Klein\, focusing on the struggle of worker
s in Argentina to take back their abandoned factories amidst economic co
llapse.
In suburban Buenos Aires\, thirty unemployed auto-parts wor
kers walk into their idle factory\, roll out sleeping mats and refuse to
leave. All they want is to re-start the silent machines. But this simpl
e act - The Take - has the power to turn the globalization debate on its
 head.
In the wake of Argentina's dramatic economic collapse in 200
1\, Latin America's most prosperous middle class finds itself in a ghost
town of abandoned factories and mass unemployment. The Forja auto plant
lies dormant until its former employees take action. They're part of a
daring new movement of workers who are occupying bankrupt businesses and
creating jobs in the ruins of the failed system.
But Freddy\, the
president of the new worker's co-operative\, and Lalo\, the political po
werhouse from the Movement of Recovered Companies\, know that their succ
ess is far from secure. Like every workplace occupation\, they have to r
un the gauntlet of courts\, cops and politicians who can either give the
ir project legal protection or violently evict them from the factory.
The story of the workers' struggle is set against the dramatic backdr
op of a crucial presidential election in Argentina\, in which the archit
ect of the economic collapse\, Carlos Menem\, is the front-runner. His c
ronies\, the former owners\, are circling: if he wins\, they'll take bac
k the companies that the movement has worked so hard to revive.
Arm
ed only with slingshots and an abiding faith in shop-floor democracy\, t
he workers face off against the bosses\, bankers and a whole system that
sees their beloved factories as nothing more than scrap metal for sale.

, Kolectivo Klandestino have a conscious commitment to providing a space
for exploring the cultures\, societies and politics of Latin America an
d an opportunity for Bristolians to engage with film and one another.
Situated in an ever-expanding series of squatted spaces and independe

ging people and place together in new ways. In line with its do-it- your
self philosophy\, the collective requires participants to take a step to
wards them and call the Klandestine Hotline to find out where each event
 will be held.
Cinema Klandestino is plugged firmly into the Bristo
l's alternative cultural scene. From their Latin niche with- in the city
's vibrant independent cinema culture the collective have forged links w
ith numerous other groups in the city\, working with them to cross-promo
te independent cultural and political events and modes of organisation.<
