Outside Wandsworth Prison

Heathfield Road

Places: wandsworth

We would like to make as much noise as we can outside Wandsworth Prison to show those inside that we remember them and demand their freedom.

Bring instruments or anything to make some noise, banners and friends.

There will be music and artists on the day coming to show their support.

Britain now has the highest prison population ever recorded. Those behind Wandsworth bars include students and protesters jailed for taking part in demonstrations against fees and cuts to EMA last year. Alongside them are hundreds of young people prosecuted or awaiting trial for taking part in the riots.

Hundreds of young people have been arrested and many charged, for standing up for free education. Zenon Mitchell-Kotsakis was sentenced to 15 months for throwing a placard stick and James Heslip (imprisoned at Wandsworth, artist of this event picture) was sentenced to 12 months.

As well as that, thousands were arrested following the large scale riots in the summer. The Guardian-LSE study "Reading the Riots" reported significant numbers of those who took part in the riots talked about their anger, not only at police harassment and stop and search, but the taking away of opportunities for young people in the form of EMA cuts and fees hikes.

Whilst the nature of student protests and riots were clearly different, the response of the authorities in both cases has been to ignore the sources of anger whilst sending more young people to jail.
Yet, not one police officer has been charged for the murder of Mark Duggan, or for the 333+ deaths in police custody or for assaults of protesters on demonstrations.
And not one MP or banker has been jailed for stealing or gambling our money.
