VIGIL FOR
SHAKER AAMER
LAST LONDONER
IN GUANTANAMO
10th DEC 2011
HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

CALL FOR THE RELEASE OF SHAKER AAMER, A VICTIM OF GROSS INJUSTICE AND TORTURE

The Save Shaker Aamer Campaign (SSAC) demands that the British Government does everything possible to secure Shaker's release.

During our vigil, campaigners will read out articles 1-30 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which speak of fundamental freedoms, justice for all and peace in the world as inalienable rights of the human family.

We will also remember all those who have suffered from a decade of mass slaughter and destruction in illegal wars - the millions that have been killed, injured, and displaced, and the unknown number unjustly imprisoned, and tortured.

In February 2002, Shaker Aamer, a British resident, was illegally "rendered" to Guantanamo. There he became a respected spokesperson for other detainees against the unjust conditions there and, as a punishment, he was held in extreme solitary confinement in Camp Echo in the harshest of conditions. He has spent many years on hunger strike and cruelly force-fed with tubes thrust through his nose. Shaker has never been charged with any offence. He is currently on hunger strike, along with a number of other prisoners, highlighting the inhumane treatment taking place in the concentration camp. They have declared their innocence of any crime.

IMPRISONED FOR YEARS ON END,
WITHOUT CHARGE OR TRIAL

President Obama has broken his promise to close Guantanamo and the 171 prisoners, including Shaker Aamer, remain there in denial of all their human rights. President Obama has ruled that prisoners can be kept in Guantanamo indefinitely. They can be held without any evidence against them. kidnapping and incarcerating people for years on end, without charge or trial, and taking away their freedom and human rights whilst simultaneously denigrating and abusing them physically and mentally is clearly unjust.

The British government must demand Shaker Aamer's release. The US Administration, in failing to close Guantanamo, failing to recognise the injustice done to Shaker Aamer and so many others, has damaged the cause of human rights throughout the world.

The SSAC calls upon the US President to close Guantanamo and return to the rule of international law and a respect for human rights.

Please write to the US and the UK Governments to demand the immediate return of Shaker Aamer to his family in the UK.
