G20 Meltdown Saturday 11th April 2009

April 11, 2009 11:30

Tagged as:

Assemble this Easter Saturday 11.30am
BETHNAL GREEN POLICE STATION
We demand answers.
Solemn procession to BANK OF ENGLAND
We lay flowers at the place where Ian Tomlinson died.

Places:

A man died on Wednesday at #G20 Meltdown protest. He had head wounds. Answers to questions surrounding his death are demanded.

Wars are raging..........climate is chaotic........urban ghost towns, rural wastelands....job losses, home reposessions.......economy in a tailspin

Are we angry? Could we take to the streets? Could we?

YES WE CAN AND YES WE DID!

FABULOUS ATMOSPHERE. THE CITY IS OURS TODAY.

QUITE RIGHT TOO!
Well yes, maybe, so long as there's tea and dancing, musicians and artists, performers, a nod from the four horsefolk of the apocalypse and a jolly good excuse.

You got it. G20 COMES TO LONDON so WE are heading to the city...

The G20 consists of 20 world "leaders". They fly in to the capital on April 1st hoping to pull off the biggest April fools hoax in history: they want us to believe that capitalism is working!

But we're not fooled! Their tax-dodging, bonus-guzzling, pension-pinching, planet plundering unregulated free market world is in meltdown. In short, capitalism is NOT working, as you will know only too well if you lost your job this week.

The G20 leaders and their forbears put the heat on us and the planet. The time has come to put the heat on them.

At 12 noon, April 1st, we're going to reclaim the City, thrusting into the very belly of the beast: the Bank of England.

There will be plenty to entertain and much to complain about.

G20 Meltdown: A VERY ENGLISH PROTEST - All nations and peoples of the world most welcome. Indeed, we urge you to get stuck in...

Bring food to share, water, tea making facilities, something to sit on, a pop up tent if you plan to stay late AND A MAP OF THE CITY. Dress for the weather and the occasion.

...zombie bankers....endangered species....Diggers....peace messengers....Alice in Wonderland characters....court jesters...revolutionaries...revolutionary cake bakers... Babes 4 the Biosphere....Climate Rushers....mermaids...everyone from every walk of life....old school mates, family and friends....

OUR SECRET WEAPONS? Merriment, mirth and the love in our hearts...

STAND UP AGAINST MURDER

given the conclusive proof of the murder now i take it this will no longer be a 'solemn procession' ? Or are direct actions being planned for other days?
we must learn from greece.

how to act on march

I KNOW that a lot of us are angry. I am angry. BUT...

I posted the following several days ago on The Guardian's blogsite:

Another demo / memorial march should be called ASAP!

And it should be MASSIVE! Anybody outraged on these pages who doesn't attend (even if it means a day's docked wages) should be ASHAMED of themselves.

The theme of the march should be: "To mourn the Deaths of Ian Tomlinson AND Civil Rights" (or "... AND of Innocence" if you like).

ALL announcements for the march should state that that this is an act of mourning and that NO violence against or provocation of the Police, Gov't, Banks, or ANY of "THEM" will be tolerated in participants. That any such attitude will be considered a mark of deepest disrespect for the dead man and his family. (His family should be asked to lead the march.)

"If you want some aggro, we can understand that, but THIS is not the time or the place! If there is any aggro, let it be the Police who are the only ones guilty of it." No bottles thrown. Not even plastic ones. No windows smashed. Not even of Police vans. Respect and Peace. NO shouting or chanting!

Wear black if possible.

It would be nice if the march were completely silent. Not even chants of "We are all Ian Tomlinson." No banners, no placards. No street theatre. They all have their place, but this is an act of mourning and Solidarity. Whether you choose to attend in order to mourn Ian or to mourn Civil Rights, let it be done in silence and dignity.

The People did this to honour Victor Jara after Pinochet's bloody coup in Chile, 1973. It was the only permitted way they had then of publicly demonstrating their rage or sorrow about that coup.

Any aggro seemingly started by participants (possible agents provocateurs?) should be defused swiftly, silently, but without echoing aggro, by neighbouring participants.

Lay wreaths on the site where Ian was hit and shoved.

Lay more wreaths at the site where he later collapsed.

Stand in silence with heads bowed.

Go home.

Let the Police and/or Media try to spin THAT.

+++

I later added: I forgot to add: NO loudspeakers blaring out carnival-type (or any other) music!

and made the following amendments:

the "Go home." line wth a possible "Go to concert." in case any such concert (Hyde Park?) were to be organised. Admission money to go to Mr. Tomlinson's family.

families of others slain by Police (Blair Peach, Jean Charles de Menezes,...) also to be invited to lead march.

NO highjacking by poliicians of ANY party or parties, EVEN if they say "setting aside our differences, we come in Solidarity". Let's not let the grassroots aspect of this be stolen from us!

reply to STAND UP AGAINST MURDER

I have been blogging on this subject fairly extensively.
I can understand the anger, the rage, the FURY that Police arrogance - of knowing that they can ALWAYS get away with it - causes. I am furious, too.

But this is ONE demo where we should maintain dignity and silence EVEN IF the Police baton-charge us.

Let them cack a few heads if they need to.

WE need to prove to the watching World that they're LIARS when they say that it's US who start the aggro.

(I know it's long, but read my first comment.)

LET IT BE NOTED!

This is confusing: The article that goes with this call for a 11th April solemn march is full of instructions for a loud and boisterous 1st April protest demo. Can it PLEASE be amended?
