With the G20 London Summit meeting, several demonstrations took place, including an early morning giant game of monopoly outside the Stock Exchange and several hundred protesting outside the ExCeL centre where the G20 were [report].
Elsewhere a remembrance event took place outside the Bank of England, near to where Ian Tomlinson died during the previous days demonstration. Heavily policed, people appealed for more information surrounding the death, and condemned the police tactics [reports 1 and 2 |Pics | Videos].
At the same time in a cynical display of power, hundreds of riot police raided two buildings associated with the protests. At Ramparts they burst through windows wearing balaclavas and aiming tazars at those inside screaming "Get down, get down" [report | Pics 1,2,3]. At Earl Street they smashed the door down and handcuffed around 40 people inside [report | Pics 1,2, 3 | Video]. A handful of arrests were made. Later those who had gathered at the Bank of England were dispersed by riot police.
Another remembrance demonstration calling for an inquiry into police actions is planned for Saturday at Bank.

what to do?
Well this kind of tactic has not been usual in the UK like it has elsewhere.
Increasingly though over the last 5 or more years, here, the police have been getting tighter and better at their job, abusing laws to take people's details, search them, enter premises, confiscate items and so on, and not giving a fuck about civil rights or taking them to court after or anything else.
What to do?

Legal advice on section 60 searches;
section 60
''Legal Advice: Section 60
important note: be sure to read legal update below
At N30 and Mayday 2000 in London, riot police cordoned off the demonstration, corralling large numbers of people into an increasing confined area before taking their names, addresses and photographs, eventually releasing them one by one. This was done under the obscure Section 60 of the Criminal Justice & Public Order Act 1994 (originally designed to prevent minor football disturbances).
The S60 order is a new police tactic at major demonstrations used effectively to control, subdue and gain personal information about protesters despite having the extraordinarily limited power simply to "Stop and search in anticipation of violence".
Its effectiveness in the past was due to the fact that no-one knew just exactly what powers the police had under S60. As it turns out, they have very few powers.
In the event of an S60 order being issued on Mayday 2001, these are the important things to remember: The police have the power to search you for weapons (and dangerous instruments). They have no other powers under S60. They can only detain you "for as long as necessary to carry out a search".
They have no legal power to force you to give them your name and address. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES give it to them: it will be kept on file for SEVEN years. When asked, say "NO COMMENT".
They have no legal power to force you to have your photograph taken. Do not allow them to do this. This too will be kept on file for SEVEN years. Keep your head turned away, or put your hand in front of your face.
They have no legal power to ask you to remove any item of clothing in public view, OTHER THAN that which is concealing your identity. Any facial masking can be confiscated.
If you are asked to remove coats/jumpers etc, REFUSE OUTRIGHT. They have no legal power to search wallets, purses, inside small pockets etc. This is an S60 search, for weapons only. If they ask to search wallets, purses, inside small pockets etc, REFUSE OUTRIGHT.
If you have a bag they will search that, but again for weapons only. Any other items, documents, potentially incriminating articles are OFF LIMITS.
Do not allow them to examine any of your personal possessions (cash cards, student cards, diaries, organisers etc). This is not part of S60. Under Article 8 of the UK Human Rights Act 1998 your privacy is assured. Make sure they know this. They can only confiscate weapons and facial masking.
They have the power to use "reasonable force" but ONLY if you do not submit to a search. No other force can be used for any other purpose.
They must tell you their name, number, station they're based at the reason for the search. Ask them for this. Not only will it piss them, off but if they don't provide this information the search will be illegal. Remember: in an S60 situation, you are accused of nothing and you have done nothing wrong. DO NOT ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS, however insignificant or polite. SAY "NO COMMENT" to everything.
Most of all, DON'T BE SCARED BY THEM! They know the law, and now so do you. USE IT!''

What's FIT stand for?
I've read the acronym FIT in a couple of articles (as in Police FIT team). What is it an abbreviation of?
Thanks in advance!
Scratch that last comment
Found out here if anyone else didn't know... http://www0.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/london/2004/11/300909.html?c=on
great work
Just want to say "great work". We're watching the coverage in Rochester, NY. Indy media rocks. www.rochester.indymedia.org
FIT =
Forward Intelligence Team
ie surveillance and harrassment of protestors (they also do football hooligans etc)
Get arrested
These unlawful detentions must be challenged by people up for getting arrested and going to court. It is NOT lawful for police to detain people in these 'kettles' and the only ways to challenge it are either respond with overwhelming force and violence against the cops or to force them to make arrests.
When I've done this, said either arrest me or let me out, I've got out (or gotten thrown to the ground and hit)
Mr
Can anyone point me in the direction of up-to-date, detailed information about squatter's rights used to occupy this building, & about the powers which the police used / abused to evict the squatters?
(Can a copper smash anything he likes if he pretends he thought there was a crook behind it? Or only if he & the owner have an extra-legal relationship so the copper knows he won't complain?)

this again
Bad start, and this always seems to happen...Europe, UK, US. Something happens on a day before the major event and the police use that as a pretext for rounding up hundreds of protesters at a convergence site the day of the major protest. It's like watching Groundhog's Day. We can almost count on the police doing this, so either organizers should find a way to prevent this from occurring, and as individuals, you may want to stay from large convergence spots near the main day of the protest. Hopefully if some decisions are still being made at such a spot, people who aren't there can be informed via email/Twitter.
Also, something is wrong with this site's certificate. I had to allow an exception, but it is probably deterring many from posting.
