07072011554-medium
Okwhan Yoon

Okwhan Yoon is from South Korea. He recently arived at Parliament Square and started his hunger strike on 26th June 2011.

He has been on a ten year, global cycling tour, in order to inspire and  promote the message of peace.

Okwhan is now on day16 of his strike, demanding  freedom for  North Korea and the opening of the border with South Korea bring with it democracy for the people!

60 years of isolation and oppression has now past and the time has come for the  people to make a peaceful stand for change.

As you will appreciate, being a cyclist, his body weight is minimal, and so the hunger strike will take its toll on him quciker than a person with greater body mass.

He is a gentleman, quiet and thoughtful. He is also determined with a strong mental focus.

A press release has been sent out. Also the All party group for both North and South Korea have been notified that he is at the square.

We encourage people to support him in his great struggle. He is sincere in his effort.

Some clarification

Hello. I have spent an hour or so talking with Okwhan Yoon today. From this experience I can tell you that this man is standing for peace, justice and freedom. He was arrested in South Korea for peaceful demonstration whilst at university tortured and sent to prison.
He expressed to me that he does not agree with the political or economic structure in South Korea or the West. He talked of the ''caste system'' that exists, whereby a financial elite consisting of bankers, land owning aristocracy, industrialists and legal professionals monopolise the World and maintain a system of oppression against the majority of working class people.
I would say that his motive for seeking to have the border removed between the North and the South would be unite the Korean people against all injustice of any kind. Obviously this would not be in the interest of the current Northern or Southern political elites, but would certainly be in the interest of the people.
He explained that there is great suffering and hardship north of the border. Many innocent people suffer under the burden of a ruthless dictatorship and struggle to live. He would like to see an end to this just as he would like to see real economic justice in the South.
I have to agree with Mr Newman's earlier point that judgements on Okwhan's motives can only be made based on evidence. If you want to know what he is about why not pop down to Parliament Sq and meet him? I am sure he will be happy to talk with you.
I hope this message clarifies any confusion about Okwhan and his peaceful fast for change.

In peace and solidarity.

Simon

A diversion from the struggle for the independent peaceful reunification of Korea and a criminal provocation against the DPRK

A diversion from the struggle for the independent peaceful reunification of Korea and a criminal provocation against the DPRK
A self-styled 'peace protester' has gone on 'hunger strike'(allegedly) in parliament sq demanding that the DPRK "open its borders ".

The protester does not call for US troops to be withdrawn from Korea and does not mention the infamous concrete wall nor does he call for the scrapping of the horrendous anti reunification Concrete wall.

Calling for 'North Korea to open its borders' is essentially parroting the propaganda of the fascist Lee Myung Bak fascist clique which talks of 'unification under liberal democracy' and 'opening up' . 'Opening borders' would really mean the DPRK 's surrender and the extension of US imperialist colonial rule to the north of Korea. To call for the DPRK "open it borders" is call for destruction of its socialist system and restore capitalism.
To call for the DPRK to "open its borders " is to violate the sovereignty of the DPRK . Such a call is tantamount to calling for the DPRK to disarm itself and allow the invasion of US troops . The DPRK's socialist system is chosen by its people and reflects the will of its people . The socialist system of the DPRK based on the Juche idea provides full employment ,virtually free housing , free education and free health care.

To achieve peace in Korea the US imperialist troops , who oppress the south Korean people, must be withdrawn . It is the US imperialists who criminally divided Korea in 1945 and have occupied the south of Korea for 66 years . They have committed numerous crimes against the south Korean people. The US imperialists keep over 29,000 troops in south Korea and 1,000 nuclear weapons. They are introducing more planes and missiles into south Korea.

The DPRK has repeatedly called for the Concrete Wall to be pulled . It has made every effort for peaceful reunification based on the three principles of independence , peace and national unity. As a result of the efforts of the DPRK the 1972 north-south agreement was signed , the June 15 north-south joint declaration of 2000 and the 4th October 2007 joint statement. The DPRK adheres to the "By Our Nation Itself " concept . It is not the DPRK that is blocking reunification but the south Korean puppets and their masters the US imperialists.
Any protest should be directed at the US imperialists and the south Korean puppets . US troops must be withdrawn from and the National Security Law abolished pro reunification patriots release from jail .

The "protest" in parliament square is at best an unnecessary diversion from the struggle for Korea's independent reunification and at worst a criminal provocation against the DPRK.
