An urgent appeal to the British Government to stop the genocidal war in Sri Lanka immediately and to save 450,000 Tamils living in Vanni region
Yesterday, 25th January 2009 we the British Tamil Health care professionals undertook a fasting campaign, standing outside the UK Parliament to high light the humanitarian crisis in the Vanni in the Tamil Homeland in Sri Lanka. We also wish to alert the British government and our British public about the painful and regrettable war of genocide on the Tamils. Sixty years of marginalisation and discrimination of Tamil people's political and fundamental birth rights to live as equal citizens in the Island had been suppressed by brutal force carried out by successive majority Sinhala governments. Many events during these periods have led to a slow genocide of our community.
The recent escalation of the war, apparently waged against the so called Tamil militants Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) as the "war on terror" is a camouflage to annihilate the Tamil community. This is very apparent from the intense aerial bombing and shelling the 450,000 civilians caught up in the ever shrinking safety areas of the Vanni. The present areas of conflict has 50,000 armed forces surrounded and are bombarding the civilians with multi barrel rockets, aerial strafing and artillery fire from land and sea. In the past 72 hours hundreds have succumbed to their injuries and many hundreds wounded are denied proper medical care. Hospitals and make shift hospitals have been bombed. This crisis is equivalent to Gaza but none shown on any TV channel in UK.
Since last September 08 the government of Sri Lanka refused visa to international NGO's and had cleared other NGO's out of this region then imposing a ban on the transportation of essential humanitarian emergency relief to the displace people in Vanni.
Currently there is insufficient food, medicine, shelter, fuel, water, and sanitation; also very few health care workers to meet the bare requirements of those Tamil civilians. The relentless military offensives by the Sri Lankan armed forces on these displaced civilians have acutely created a humanitarian crisis. Agonizing cries are heard ever louder and we the Tamil Diaspora are frustrated and angered by it all.
The Sri Lankan government continues to deny these atrocities knowing that any allegations could not be verified as there are no international agencies helping with the crisis. Secondly, as long as the International community keeps silent, the Government of Sri Lankan can fearlessly continue its mission of genocide on Tamils.
We, therefore appeal to British Prime minister to use his good office to
[1] Force an immediate ceasefire by both parties to this conflict to prevent further loss of lives.
[2] Take any necessary steps immediately to safeguard the civilians trapped in the conflict zone, either by deploying a UN sponsored or EU sponsored monitoring mission.
[3] Create safety zone and No fly zone from the Sri Lankan armed forces as a matter of urgency.
[4] Provide immediate medical relief to help civilians to seek modicum of independent normal life.
