Food Not Bombs Hand out Free Food in Hackney!Tagged as: economic_crisis environmentalism

A group of around 15 volunteers converged on Hackney town hall on Christmas eve armed with vast quantities of delicious, warm vegan food carried by cycle, trailer and trolley to give freely to the community, no strings attached, under the banner of 'Reclaim your food'.
The largely autonomous group is based on the founding principles of Food not Bombs, a fast growing revolutionary, non-violent, all-volunteer network that provides free, hot vegetarian meals and political support to low income people in hundreds of communities in the Americas, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Australia. For nearly 30 years the movement has worked to end hunger and has supported actions to stop the globalization of the economy, restrictions to the movements of people, end exploitation and the destruction of the earth.
Throughout the week preceding a Food not Bombs event, volunteers collect food that would otherwise have been sent to landfill and deliver it to a London social centre, where the food is cleaned and prepared ready to be cooked in large quantities every second Saturday and fourth Sunday of the month.
This week the group prepared a wide range of foods from guacamole to stir fry and soup to fruit salads. A range of unprepared fresh fruit and veg, breads and puddings were also taken to allow people to take home with them.
Upon arrival the group were immediately greeted by a group of several cold and hungry people, who were more than happy to be the first diners. The food was then served over several hours to people from all walks of life, many who were just happy for a bit of warm grub but also many who were amazed at both the audacity and creativity of the protest. The well received created space provided a forum for people to discuss many pertinent issues in an unpressurised, welcoming and most importantly, positive environment. Many visitors pledged their support by joining the group; offering their time for future food not bombs events, making interesting contributions to the possibilities of future action, including a visit from a local Buddhist group who kindly provided some more food to be given away.
People filtered in and out of the group for the rest of the evening until most the food had been served, several people then cleaned up and the remaining food was taken back to the social centre where it was given to others to use.
The group will continue to provide free food, and the next event is planned for the 9^th of January 2010. Why not get involved? How simpler, better and more rewarding could it be? Using waste of capitalism and surplus production to feed people you've never seen before with delicious vegan food! Cooking will start at 11am at 195 Mare Street, and
will be served somewhere in Hackney from around 2pm.
