London Eco-village Occupation
Tagged as: culture environmentalism free_spacesNeighbourhoods: brentford
Around 70 protesters occupied an empty plot of land next to Kew Bridge in Brentford, London (NR TW8 0EW). They plan to setup an eco-village. This will showcase community based sustainable methods of living such as vegetable growing, compost toilets. They are now in the process of setting up tents and are cleaning the site of rubbish. See an aerial map of the location, and the KewEcoVillage twitter.

This eco-village occupation is inspired by campaigns like The Land is Ours which campaigns peacefully for access to the land, its resources, and the decision-making processes affecting them, for everyone, irrespective of race,
gender or age. for more information, please visit:

Joining the camp
If you would like to join our autonomous space in west london then how do you get there?
1. Cycle; from central london there is one road with no change. The A315, it changes names to many things but starts south of Hyde Park (as Knightsbridge and Kensington Road) and continues through Chisick (Chiswick High Street) right untill the round about where the camp is setup. From kew bridge the camp can be clearly seen.
2. Take a train: from south east london this is the best option. Train are regular out of waterloo and take about 25 minutes to get to Kew Bridge station. You can take your bike on these trains.
3. Get daddy to give you a lift in his helicopter: you may get thrown out.

Call out for kit
We could do with the more of the following if you are thinking of visiting:
>Big water containers (>10ltrs)
>Oil for bolts
>Screws, bolts, coach bolts.
>Stationary: paper, pens, sticky tape, etc.,
>Banner making material/paints.
>Tarps
>String and Rope
>Spades shovels and forks
>Lots of hose for moving water.
We have a really awesome and secure site, it looks like we are staying we have one large issue. Most of the site is heavily overlooked so we need to keep things tidy, make things visually interesting and have banners/posters so people know what we are up to. The local have been very supportive so far due to the proposed use of the site we are occupying. Lets keep it that way...any help much appreciated.
Update on progress
Just to bring people up to date a little on progress on site.
Yesterday afternoon there were quite a few people around but a shortage of materials and tools to take full advantage of the energy at hand. A group of people spent several hours handing out leaflets and speaking to passers-by to inform people of what was going on and to find out from the locals as much as possible about the status of the land and the contentious development plans.
A meeting was held mid afternoon to talk about practicalities like water supply and toilet provision and it was decided that a temporary moveable toilet would be built first to give those on site a few extra days to think about the complete site layout before committing to a location for compost loos.
A water supply was located and should be in place by the time of writing.
The start of a kitchen has been formed in and around a open fronted tin roofed brick structure, with a large work surface for food prep and a shelving unit. Outside, a large rocket stove and washing up facilities have ben set up.
There are no large marquees or anything like that on site but anyone thinking of visiting who has no tent will be welcome and there is a small brick building with mattresses in for temporary crash space.
There is meant to be a website being set up for the project along with a facebook and twitter etc but I don't know the addresses for them. I also don't know what number is being used as a site phone but suggest you try the mobile number in the call out above.
I'll add to the wish list above by saying this....
People with meeting facilitation skills urgently needed.
Polyprop or other tatted rope and string.
Tools of all types, (and gaffer tape)
Carpet (not foam backed please)
Tarps and similar

Also in terms of progress, it felt really good today. High energy levels. The main paths have had all the mud removed to reveal the solid concrete bellow which is good for if it rains. The paths have been demarcated using stones. We have some art going on with a Peace mural. Some of the enormous mound near the front has been cut away in order to provide good quality soil for some raised beds. More raised beds have been made by the entrance. A solid shelter has replace the tent that was being used. 8 25L drums are being used for water. A basic shower has been built. Food stocks are high. Explanatory laminated a4 signs have gone up around the perimiter. Stawberies are being planted in tyres. A tone of wood has been stripped of nails and is ready for conversion into a useful structure. The site has been massively tidied up including removal of old shopping trollied and matresses. A twitter acount, facebook account and basic website are up and running. We have had a press meeting. Leaflets have been made and more are on the way. A questionaire is being created for local people. Signage encouraging local to come and have a look around has been put up at the gates.
