EDL - Cops ask for 30 day ban on all marches?

Following a campaign including a 25,000 petition to ask the police to request a ban on the EDL march planned through Tower Hamlets on Sat 3rd Sept, and the threat of legal action by the local mayor, it seems the met police have now asked the home secretary to ban ALL marches in the five london boroughs for a period of 30 days.
While the exact wording of the request is currently unknown, it is assumed that traditional marches and parades and funerals will be except from the ban, but other protests may be caught by it. The full details will only be known when the home secretary announces the final decision.
Many MPs and Councillors that asked for a ban on the march cited the cost of policing it as justification enough! This is certainly a dangerous road to be travelling down...
The EDL are saying they still intend to hold a static demonstration (with meet up points to 'walk' to the static location).
Unite Against Facism are urging people to still attend the counter demonstration on Sat 3rd Sept at 11am, Weavers Fields, London E2 6HW
Mass community organising has been going on over the last few months to prepare a huge local resistance to the EDL and thousands were also expected to travel from across the country to be in the streets on sept 3rd.
During the summer as some campaigned for a ban on the EDL march, other voices including Tower Hamlets ALARM were arguing against a ban.

Banning things, a rocky road
Woops, bit of a cock-up there then wasn't it ?
That's the problem with getting things banned it can come back and bite you on the bum. There is a reason free speech is defended and ludicrous ideas like "No platform" ridiculed by those with a few brain cells.
cable street 75?
would a month long ban just hit the 75 march (and rally?) set for 2nd Oct?

Where does a possible ban leave the Disarm DSEI protest 10 days later?
Bloody liberals, now look what you've gone and done...
DSEi
DSEi isn't a march as such, and half the anti dsei events don't ask police permission anyway! (and wouldn't get it if they asked).
I see the ban on all marches has now been rubber-stamped btw but may be framed with specific reference to edl/uaf.
Home Office press release
Friday, 26 Aug 2011
English Defence League members had planned to march in Tower Hamlets on September 3, with rival demonstrations expected from opposition groups.
But the Metropolitan Police Service applied for permission to stop the protests amid public order fears.
After receiving the official application late on Thursday, Home Secretary Theresa May today agreed to a ban across five London boroughs.
She said: 'Having carefully considered the legal tests in the Public Order Act and balanced rights to protest against the need to ensure local communities and property are protected, I have given my consent to a ban on all marches in Tower Hamlets and four neighbouring boroughs for a 30-day period.
'I know that the Metropolitan Police are committed to using their powers to ensure communities and properties are protected. We encourage all local people and community leaders to work with the police to ensure community relations are not undermined by public disorder.'
The Home Secretary also wrote to local political representatives to inform them of her decision after several had expressed concerns about possible public order implications if the march went ahead.
The ban imposed will cover all protest marches by any group, but will not prevent static demonstrations.
