March 27, 2011 00:58 - Reports of people still being arrested at Trafalgar Square

March 26, 2011 23:25 - Trafalgar Square is now totally locked down, with small groups kettled inside. There are some small groups hanging around outside the kettle but things appear to be effectively finished in this area for the evening, pending arrests and ID'ing pended protestors.

March 26, 2011 23:10 - From Sukey: 30 to 40 people kettled in Duncannon Street, about two dozen riot police. Police claim they are letting people out but those in the kettle say this is not true. Helicopters overhead. Camera people on the top of buildings seem to be police and not media.

March 26, 2011 23:00 - Snatch squads operating in the area [pic]. Bottles thrown in anger at police aggression. Hundreds of police in Trafalgar Square, 70 police vans. Crowds spilling out into the traffic - scuffles all over. Police moving into positions.

March 26, 2011 22:57 - From Sukey: Trafalgar Square closed off by rows of riot police and half a dozen vans. There is also a helicopter above.

March 26, 2011 22:56 - Police shield distribution van by Trafalgar Square was handing out shields to officers when crowd surrounded it to stop them. Riot police retaliated.

March 26, 2011 22:50 - There are about 500 people and about 100 riot police outside Charing Cross station. There is lots of fighting and lots of fires burning too. There are also more and more people arriving, from Trafalgar Square, where police continue to push people away.  There are three more riot police vans arriving. Police just beat whoevers comes in near them.

March 26, 2011 22:45 - Trafalgar Square is now cleared apart from a kettle on the west side. Outside the square, on Cannon Street, riot police have crushed a barricade that had been built. Police have pushed people, people have pushed back, and there have been a few arrests. It is all very chaotic [report & pics]

March 26, 2011 22:37 - Chaos in and especially around Trafalgar Square as police push every one out. Traffic had been fluid again around the square but now the crowd that has been pushed out of Trafalgar Square is holding down the traffic as the road is the only place they can go to.

There are about 80 riot vans. The police seem to be manouvering but whatever they want to achieve, is very unclear.

March 26, 2011 22:30 - Hundreds of police have pushed the large majority of people out of Trafalgar Square. There have been attempts by police to grab people, and several people have been de-arrested.

A small crowd of a few hundred people at the base of Nelson's column is holding its ground, but police are pushing them out of the square by force. Some other groups on the square seem kettled but police are more generally pushing the crowd away.

March 26, 2011 22:25 - Reports of a seriously injured man, barely conscious, having lost big amounts of blood, on Charing Cross Road, very close to Trafalgar Square. It may not have anything to do with the demonstrations, necessarily. Police are helping the man and waiting for an ambulance.

Police are only letting people out of Trafalgar Square on the north east corner. Hundreds of police now in the square.

March 26, 2011 22:15 - People seem to be leaving Trafalgar Square. About 150 of them, chanting "Whose streets? Our streets!" are marching towards Charing Cross Road.

March 26, 2011 21:30 - At the Hyde Park occupation there are 200 people, 30 tents and a marquee with power and music [pic]. People are now chilling out after one of the biggest demonstrations in London for years, and discussing the events of the day. They plan to stay for the night.

Police has started containing people in Trafalgar Square and arresting people too. It is not clear how many arrests have been made.

It is not a kettle yet but it seems to be forming.

Flares are being launched at police. They are now expanding their lines, pushing protesters back, using shields and batons.

Chants against police continue. Many police have been seen with cuts and injuries from having glass thrown at them.

March 26, 2011 20:45 - Police report: 157 arrests today so far today. Up to 80 from Fornums and Masons occupation.

March 26, 2011 20:25 - Hyde Park occupation getting underway. Fires and music. Not huge but people still putting up tents.

March 26, 2011 20:20 - The last few people at Fortnums are being loaded into the coach, arrested for aggregated tresspass. Mainly police left in the area. Since earlier there has been an increase in property damage of selected buildings. Random arrests still seen around central London.

March 26, 2011 19:55 - There are still bonfires burning in Oxford Circus with crowds milling around. Regents Street is now open. Piccadilly Place is still blocked by police at the Circus end. Crowds around Eros statue watching the events unfold. Trafalgar square is dancing away, relatively police free, although police lines are moving down from Piccadilly.

March 26, 2011 18:15 - A tent has been put up in trafalgar square, as large numbers of people gather. The end of the march finally reaches Hyde Park, illustrating the scale of the protest today. Numerous battles with police continue in Picadilly and many loud fireworks going off.

March 26, 2011 18:10 - UK uncut have released a press statement: "Fortnum & Mason tax dodge over £40 million by its owners Whittington Investments which have a 54% stake in Associated British Foods who produce Rivita, Kingsmill and others and own Primark. ABF have dodged over £40 million in tax."

March 26, 2011 18:05 - Police have closed off the end of Piccadilly Place. [plixipic] Regents street is closed off half way up with 17 police vans pushing down the road. Most other roads off Piccadilly Circus are still passable. Two sound systems are playing by the fountain and the road has sticker tape across reading "Capitalism means war".

March 26, 2011 17:50 - Clashes with police who came out of a side street and were pushed back by the crowd at the bottom of Regents street. A kettle has now been formed on one side of Piccadilly Circus, concentrating on the Eros Statue, but there are still exit points.

Police responded with heavy truncheon blows as people fought to defend their ground. There are reports of missiles being thrown. March 26, 2011 16:50 - x26update - Interview from Picadilly: Riot police have blocked off the entrance to Fortnum & Mason.  Can't see anything but people.  TUC demo just passing.  Some pedestrians annoyed at protestors, others at police.  Not enough police to stop people doing what they want to do.  Police using shields to push people back.

March 26, 2011 16:45 - The Fortnum & Masons shop is now surrounded by a line of police with protestors still occupying the roof and first floor. Piccadilly Street has been closed down by a line of riot police with some vans beyond them.

People are moving quickly to take advantage of slow-moving police forces.  There's a much greater awareness of protesting methods that are productive while also outfoxing the authorities.

In the middle is the Radical workers bloc with around 100 people carrying red and blask flags. Police FIT team have been filming this part of the march. The atmosphere is reported and great!
