today was the annual general meeting of oil giant, shell. the main international AGM took place in holland at the hague, but uk shareholders joined in by videolink at a meeting at the barbican. despite a massive security operation, the AGM was hit both outside and in by a stream of activists from 'rising tide' 'occupy oil', 'shell to sea', 'tar sands uk', and 'greenpeace' among others.

in the third london action today, the upper street shell garage in islington was closed by activists for over an hour. while a samba band played, loads of leaflets were handed out. many passing motorists hooted support and cyclists often cheered.

several hundred activists managed to blockade the oil refinery near stanford-le-hope for several hours this afternoon. they stopped more than 50 tankers during the course of their protest. police were caught off guard by the elaborate and brilliantly organised strategies of the groups involved, and the event passed off with no arrests.
